Exterior masonry and render are exposed to rain, sunlight, temperature changes and biological growth. That means the condition of the surface and the suitability of the coating matter at least as much as the chosen colour.

Loose or failing paint should not simply be buried under another coat. Dirt and growth may need cleaning, defects may need appropriate repair and previously painted surfaces need to be checked for soundness. Different substrates can also require different preparation or primer systems.

Weather and drying conditions

Exterior decorating has to be planned around suitable conditions. Rain is the obvious problem, but damp surfaces, low temperatures, very hot surfaces and insufficient drying time can also affect application. A realistic schedule needs some flexibility for the weather.

Colour and the whole elevation

Masonry colour interacts with brick, roof tiles, windows, doors, garage doors and roofline details. Looking at the entire elevation before choosing a finish can avoid creating several individually fashionable colours that do not work together.

When a coating is not the first answer

Persistent damp, significant cracking or unstable render may indicate an underlying problem that should be investigated before decorative painting. Paint should finish a sound surface, not disguise a defect that still needs attention.
